Escape Room vs. video games – what’s the difference?

Space

Video games are a contemporary window onto distant worlds. In the course of their exploration, we can experience not only closed, linear stories, but also vast, open worlds. However, interacting with stretches of digital terrain is purely virtual and is often limited to visual, auditory and haptic experience (e.g. through the vibration of a pad).

Escape Room addresses these limitations and offers a multisensory immersion in history. To have an adventure, you have to physically place yourself in a slice of the fantastic world and interact with it in a tangible way. The texture of wood, a smell, a rustle or a flash of coloured light – all of these elements can be vital clues that will determine the fate of your gameplay.

Although video game spaces and Escape Room games are vastly different in scale, both forms allow players to immersively experience the world and the stories being told.

Time

Escape Room mobilises for quick action. Players have a limited amount of time to solve a series of puzzles and complete a story mission.

Every second counts and the time pressure increases adrenaline, excitement and the feeling that you only have one attempt to complete the task.

Unlike in a video game, where the standard is to be able to save your progress and return to the game at any time. The gameplay can therefore last for hours, days or even weeks. It all depends on the player’s individual gameplay style.

Cooperation and interaction

Escape Room requires intense collaboration with the group. Each player brings their own unique skills and perspectives to the team, which are essential to solving the puzzles and escaping within the time limit. Being an individual is of little use here – the vast majority of Escape Rooms require at least two people to co-operate.

For solo players, however, there is certainly no shortage of titles for PC or consoles. Video games nowadays provide both full-fledged single-player experiences and elaborate cooperative multiplayer or MMO (from Massively Multiplayer Online) systems. As in Escape Room, co-operation in multiplayer can be key, but interaction with other players is often limited to digital communication.

Level of difficulty

Escape Room gameplay is usually unchanged and universal for any group of players. Depending on the needs of the participants, minor modifications to the puzzles or the design of the Room are allowed (e.g. possible facilitation of our Escape Rooms for younger players – during birthdays), but the basic premise does not change.

Video games typically allow the difficulty level to be adjusted to suit the player. What’s more, it’s also an industry standard to be able to make the game easier or harder during gameplay. This privilege allows players to scale the difficulty level to the character’s current experience and definitely makes the process of progressing through every more difficult segment of the game more enjoyable.

Which to choose?

Both forms of entertainment have their unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Escape Room offers an unforgettable experience in a physical world, but one that requires the ability to work as a team and under the pressure of escaping time.

Video games, on the other hand, offer vast, virtual worlds that allow for increasing freedom of gameplay and exploration at one’s own pace, without being able to physically interact with the game world.

However, it is important to remember that Escape Room debuted as one of many video game genres. The seemingly far-flung forms of gaming therefore share more common action patterns and principles than might appear at first glance. However, it is best to find out for yourself!
