Interesting facts about Cracow
What you need to know about Krakow
Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, and the first documented reference to it is an account by a merchant in 965, who mentions the sprawling stronghold lying at the crossroads of trade routes. Until the end of the 16th century it was the capital of Poland, but even after the capital was moved to the Wawel Hill it was still the place of coronation and burial of the next kings.
Interesting facts about Cracow
Krakow’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. Its medieval layout has been preserved over the centuries, and its streets are lined with stunning architecture from various periods. The city’s central squares, ancient buildings, and charming alleyways offer a window into its rich past. In addition to the Main Market Square, the Old Town is home to landmarks like the Barbican, an iconic fortification that once protected the city, and the Collegium Maius, the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University.
Walking through the Old Town, every now and then you may see a cart with obwarzanki, which are unquestionably among the symbols of Cracow. Dipped in boiling water and then baked on a griddle, they are popular with tourists and locals. The game lasts 140 minutes, so we recommend stocking up on obwarzanki as provisions for the road, and getting to know the regional delicacy in the process.
Krakow is also called The City of Churches. Krakow boasts over 200 churches, many of which are architectural wonders in their own right. Some of the most famous include St. Mary’s Basilica, with its stunning Gothic design and the famous wooden altarpiece, and the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, which features an impressive Baroque façade. The city is also home to the 14th-century Corpus Christi Basilica, and the Church of St. Andrew, one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Poland.
The Krakow’s Main Market Square is one of the largest in Europe and the heart of the city. Spanning over 40,000 square meters, it’s surrounded by historic buildings, including the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), which dates back to the 14th century and was once a major center for international trade. The square is also home to St. Mary’s Basilica, with its stunning altarpiece by the sculptor Veit Stoss and the iconic trumpet call (Hejnał Mariacki in polish) that is played every hour from the church’s highest tower.
