Behind the scenes of an escape room – how are they created?

When solving puzzles in an escape room, you’ve probably wondered more than once what the process of its creation was like? How did someone come up with such an idea, and how did they then make it all come together? Today we come to you with some behind the scenes insight. We will give you some hints that can help you create your own puzzles!

The plot of the game and the theme of the room, in other words: the clue

Of course, the plot of the game is the first thing to come up with. Your task is to transport players to a completely different world, so that they forget about the real one for a while. Therefore, it is of the most importance that the plot is consistent with the overall theme of the room. The narrative and story of the room has a significant impact on the players’ decisions, so introducing a story or character can set the mood and help the group immerse themselves in the world even before they start playing.

Don’t forget to make sure the group also knows the goal of their quest. Will it be to save the world of magic, or perhaps to find the perpetrator of a crime? The possibilities are endless. Defining the goal will also determine whether the tone of the game will be heroic, adventure, survival, or perhaps suspenseful?

Decide how the players discover the hints

If you have the main theme of the room, it’s time to choose props that will not only set the mood of the room, but can also serve as hints.

Letters and numbers are universal tools that puzzle rooms use, so it’s a good idea to choose items that incorporate them, such as clocks, books, maps.

The hints can be sought by players or passed on during the game by unlocking various items or opening padlocks.

In order to eliminate player confusion, you can mark items that are not involved in the game and inform the players before the game.

Don’t forget to incorporate a way to communicate with the group during their gameplay – usually it’s a walkie-talkie.

Come up with the puzzles and the course of the room

Before you get to the puzzles, however, decide whether you want the course of the game to be linear or have multiple paths to some solutions. This will make it easier for you to come up with puzzles later. Below is a small list of the most common types of puzzles:

  • Searching for hidden elements
  • Sound or smell puzzles
  • Pattern recognition
  • Math or word puzzles
  • Assembling physical objects (such as jigsaws)

Of course, there are many more, and there is nothing to limit your imagination.
