PUZZLE ROOM: 10 TIPS FOR BEGINNERS, OR HOW TO PLAY TO WIN IN AN ESCAPE ROOM

Are you just beginning your adventure with intelligent entertainment such as escape rooms? Or maybe you’ve already happened to visit a puzzle room, but would like to learn more about how to play to win (and make it before the time runs out…)? Great, you’re in the right place! Here are escape room tips to help you complete the mission in the allotted time. Especially if it’s your first puzzle room 😊

ESCAPE ROOM – TIPS ON HOW TO GET OUT OF THE ESCAPE ROOM

In front of you are 10 useful tips from a regular (more than 100 escape rooms experience 😊):

1. START RIGHT AWAY, THAT IS READY? SET? GO!

There are usually 60 minutes to exit the escape room (complete the mission). Does an hour sound like a lot of time? Nothing could be further from the truth. Believe me, there is plenty to do in an escape room! So make sure to concentrate and get into action right away!

2. SEARCH THE PUZZLE ROOM THOROUGHLY

It’s best to divide yourselves between sections – some check everything against the right wall, others against the left wall, and so on. Take a strategic approach. If you have the opportunity, divide into 2-person patrols. Every two pairs of eyes are better than one. Someone may pay attention to something that someone else will miss.

3. DON’T ALL FOCUS ON ONE PUZZLE

I remind you that time is ticking. If you are all focused on one puzzle, you may miss important clues located in another part of the room. If part of the Team is stuck on one riddle – swap, someone may notice something you missed. Remember – the escape room is a team game!

4. SHOUT LOUDLY IF YOU FIND SOMETHING USEFUL

Great communication between you is crucial to your success. If you spot something relevant, let the others know loudly, e.g. I have a letter lock (someone in another part of the room may just happen to have discovered a word puzzle that will lead to that very lock). Communicate that you have found an item – someone may need it. It’s all about making sure you can still work together, even though you’re searching different parts of the puzzle room.

5. USE THE POWER OF BRAINSTORMING

Each of you has different experiences and a different way of thinking. Together, you have the best chance of success. Consider any ideas that come to mind. Even if they are not the right solutions, they can trigger associations that will lead you to your goal.

6. DON’T MAKE UP QUANTUM THEORIES

If you catch yourself coming up with more and more abstract and offbeat concepts, stop. The puzzle room is still pretty much a form of entertainment, not scientific research. Leave that puzzle for later and get on with another one, and in the meantime, you may find a new clue. The creators of real-life puzzle rooms want you to succeed, not get frustrated.

7. ORGANIZE THE THINGS YOU’VE FOUND

Arrange where you will put away items you have found that may be useful in further puzzles. It’s also a good idea to group used items separately – in a well-designed escape room, each found key can be used only once.

8. NOTHING BY FORCE!

If something is to be opened (door, chest, etc.), it will not require the use of force, but only to find the right solution. Trying to open something by force, can only damage the room, spoil the fun for you and the next players and, well, can be quite expensive…

9. IN AN ESCAPE ROOM ASK FOR HINTS

There is nothing embarrassing about this. Sometimes you can miss a small element, head for the solution and waste time unnecessarily. Sit for more than 5 minutes on one challenge and nothing? Talk to the Game Master for a micro hint. After all, the most satisfaction comes from completing a mission.

10. MAKE USE OF THE STRENGTHS OF THE ENTIRE TEAM!

A variety of puzzles await you in the escape room, and a variety of skills will come in handy.
