Trivia about Krakow
Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland and the first documented reference about it is a merchant’s account from year 965. The merchant mentions a vast castle located at the crossroads of trade routes. Until the end of the 16th century, it was the capital of Poland. Then, after the capital was moved to Warsaw, Wawel Hill continued to be the coronation and burial place of successive kings.
Such a long existence of the city is associated with the emergence of many legends. Old buildings hide interesting facts about Krakow. We at Gamescape Krakow have decided to make use of the city’s wonderful heritage. Our city game Krakow Legends will take you through the legends and curiosities of the Old Town. It will give you the opportunity to get to know the town from a different perspective.
Interesting facts about Krakow in our city game
Our city game contains a dozen or so riddles and each of them relates to some legend or curiosity about Krakow. The game is aimed not only at tourists from outside the city, but also at its residents. The game includes popular legends such as the one about the Wawel Dragon, as well as lesser-known ones – for example about the Black Lady. In this blog, you will have the opportunity to learn some of the interesting facts that appear in the Krakow Legends game, but rest assured, we will not spoil the game for you.
Your helper on the game is Wawrzynek, with whom there is a legend of the Yellow Slipper, or yellow leather shoe, which Wawrzynek lost when he was helping Wit Stwosz work on the altarpiece in St Mary’s Church. This shoe was found many years later in 1867 during restoration work on the altarpiece.
As you continue along the route, you can see the famous Barbican and the Krzysztofory Palace, which, according to legend, is haunted by the Black Lady. Further on, you will go through the Cloth Hall, where you can see the knife with which brother killed his brother during the race to build the towers of St. Mary’s Church, and the Collegium Maius, the place where Nicolaus Copernicus studied. And these are just a few of the places you’ll see on your way to Gamescape Krakow.
Walking through the Old Town, every now and then you may see a trolley with obwarzanki, which undoubtedly belongs to the symbols of Krakow. Dipped in boiling water and then baked on the grill, they are popular with tourists and locals alike. The game lasts 140 minutes, so we recommend that you stock up on obwarzanki as provisions for the journey, and get to know the regional delicacy in the process.
The Krakow Legends city game is only available on Sundays, but when you contact us, the Gamescape Krakow game masters will certainly be able to help with a convenient date.
